A Weekend in Corbridge: A Two-Day Itinerary
How to spend a weekend in Corbridge: the Roman Town and Corbridge Hoard, St Andrew's Church and the 1674 bridge, independent shops, riverside walks, Dilston and a Sunday trip to Hexham or Hadrian's Wall, with where to stay, eat and drink.
Corbridge is small enough to walk across in ten minutes, but there is enough here to fill a relaxed weekend: a Roman town with one of the best site museums on Hadrian's Wall, a Saxon church, a 17th-century bridge, a good run of independent shops and some well-loved pubs. Hexham and the Wall itself are a short trip away for a second day.
This itinerary assumes you arrive on Saturday morning. Opening hours below were checked in November 2026 and change with the seasons, so check before you travel. Many places open less in winter, and we note where that matters.
Getting here and where to stay
Corbridge station is on the Tyne Valley line between Newcastle and Carlisle, about half a mile south of the village centre over the bridge. By car, there is a free village car park just south of the bridge; see our guide to parking in Corbridge and, for buses and trains, getting around Corbridge without a car.
Several of the village pubs have rooms, which means you can walk everywhere once you have arrived:
- The Angel of Corbridge on Main Street, a coaching inn with 10 bedrooms, breakfast included.
- The Golden Lion on Hill Street, with six en-suite rooms.
- The Wheatsheaf on St Helens Street, reopened in 2026 with six B&B rooms aimed at walkers.
- The Dyvels on Station Road, close to the railway station, a small country pub with letting rooms.
Saturday morning: Corbridge Roman Town
Start with the reason most visitors come. Corbridge Roman Town is about half a mile west of the Market Place, an easy walk along the road. You can walk the Roman main street, see the granaries and the remains of the walled military compound, and then spend time in the museum, which holds the Corbridge Hoard and its remarkably well-preserved Roman armour.
Through the winter English Heritage lists it as open at weekends only, 10am to 4pm, with more opening days from spring. Allow at least an hour and a half. There is no cafe on site, so have breakfast first. Our guide to visiting Corbridge Roman Town has more detail.
Saturday lunch
Walk back into the village for lunch. For something quick, Grants Bakery and Corbridge Larder are both popular for picnic food and deli lunches. If you would rather sit down, our guide to coffee shops and cafes in Corbridge lists the cafes serving lunch, and most pubs serve food at lunchtime too. Save room for later: Coffuffle on Middle Street is a small coffee shop that also makes its own chocolate truffles.
Saturday afternoon: the village on foot
Spend the afternoon on our Corbridge heritage walking trail, which takes about an hour at a gentle pace. The highlights:
- St Andrew's Church, open daily, roughly 9.30am to 4pm. Look for the Roman arch inside, reused from the Roman town.
- The Vicar's Pele in the churchyard, a 14th-century fortified tower built to protect the vicar from Border raiders.
- The Market Place and Town Hall, the heart of the village.
- Corbridge Bridge, built in 1674 and the only bridge on the Tyne to survive the great flood of 1771.
Leave time for the shops. Forum Books, an independent bookshop in a former Victorian chapel, is a favourite (open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm). For the rest of the high street, from gift shops to homeware, see our guide to shopping in Corbridge.
If there is a home game at Tynedale Park, Tynedale RFC, who are celebrating their 150th season in 2026-27, are a short walk from the village on Station Road.
Saturday evening
Corbridge is good for a pub evening. The Black Bull, the Angel and the Golden Lion are all within a couple of minutes of each other, and the Wheatsheaf has regular live music. For the history behind them, see our guide to the oldest pubs in Corbridge.
For dinner, the village has Italian, Indian and modern British options as well as pub food; our guide to eating out in Corbridge lists them all. Book ahead on Saturday nights, as the village is popular.
Sunday morning: a walk
Start Sunday with a walk. The riverside path along the Tyne is the easiest option, and our guide to walks around Corbridge has routes of different lengths, including one out towards Dilston, where the ruined tower of Dilston Castle stands in the grounds of the Radclyffe family's old estate. Read about the family in our guide to famous people from Corbridge.
From spring to autumn, Dilston Physic Garden is worth adding: a garden of medicinal plants just outside the village. It opens Wednesday to Sunday from April to October, on fewer days in late autumn and early spring, and closes completely from late December to early February.
If you have a dog with you, our dog-friendly Corbridge guide covers walks and the pubs and cafes that welcome dogs.
Sunday lunch
A Sunday roast in a village pub is the obvious choice, and several pubs in Corbridge serve one. Our guide to Sunday roasts in Corbridge compares them. Booking is a good idea, especially for larger groups.
Sunday afternoon: Hexham or Hadrian's Wall
For the afternoon, choose between a market town and the Wall.
Hexham is about 4 miles west, one stop away on the train or a short drive. Hexham Abbey, the Old Gaol museum and the Queen's Hall arts centre are all in the centre. See hexham.live's guide to things to do in Hexham.
Hadrian's Wall is a short drive north. Brunton Turret, a well-preserved stretch of the Wall, is free to visit at any reasonable time in daylight, and Chesters Roman Fort, with its bathhouse and museum, is nearby and opens at weekends through the winter. Without a car, the Hadrian's Wall Country Bus (Go North East 122) runs from Hexham to the Wall forts. Our guide to museums near Corbridge covers the forts and their collections.
Visiting in winter
A winter weekend in Corbridge works well, but plan around shorter opening hours:
- Corbridge Roman Town opens at weekends only in winter, so Saturday or Sunday is the time to go.
- Dilston Physic Garden closes for the depth of winter, and Aydon Castle, a medieval manor house near the village, is closed until it reopens in 2027.
- Corbridge Library, useful on a wet day, opens on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm.
- Daylight is short, so do walks in the morning and leave the pubs, shops and museum for later.
For more ideas at any time of year, see our full guide to things to do in Corbridge.
Best for:
A weekend in Corbridge works without a car. The train from Newcastle takes around 40 minutes, everything in this itinerary apart from Dilston and Hadrian's Wall is walkable from the station, and Hexham is a single stop further west.
