About Corbridge Roman Town

Corbridge Roman Town lets visitors walk along the original Roman main street, lined with the remains of the town's buildings. English Heritage describes it as the most northerly town in the Roman Empire, which supplied the garrisons along Hadrian's Wall, about 2.5 miles to the north. The site began as a series of forts guarding the river crossing from around AD 86 and later grew into a supply base and civilian town on Dere Street.

The on-site museum shows an internationally important collection of finds, including the Corbridge Hoard, buried in the 2nd century AD and found in 1964, and the Corbridge Lion. The Romans, Rivers & Rituals exhibition, included in standard admission, features Roman objects recovered from the River Tyne. Bus route 684 runs to the site all year, and visitors who show a bus ticket get 20% off a walk-up ticket.
