Sunday Roast in Corbridge
Where to get a Sunday roast in and around Corbridge: four village pubs and a country inn at Riding Mill, with serving times, booking advice and the roasts on their menus.
Corbridge does Sunday lunch well. Four pubs in the village serve a roast on Sundays, and a fifth is a few miles east at Riding Mill. Serving times vary a lot, from a short lunchtime sitting to food until 9pm, so the time you want to eat is the best place to start. This guide is about the roast itself: who serves one, when, how to book and what's on the plate. For the beer, gardens and history of each pub, see our guide to the best pubs in Corbridge, and for restaurants and cafes, our guide to eating out in Corbridge.
Menus change with the seasons and prices go up, so we haven't listed prices. Check the current menu and book ahead, especially in winter and on bank holiday weekends.
Sunday serving times at a glance
- The Dyvels Inn: Sunday lunch 12pm to 3pm

- The Angel of Corbridge: Sunday menu 12pm to 6.30pm
- The Black Bull: food 11.30am to 9pm
- The Wellington, Riding Mill: food 11.30am to 9pm
These are the times each pub or CAMRA currently publishes. Confirm them when you book.
The Angel of Corbridge
The Angel of Corbridge on Main Street runs a separate Sunday menu from 12pm to 6.30pm and says its Sunday lunches are "very popular among our loyal locals". The example Sunday menu on its website is a set menu of two or three courses. Its roasts are sirloin of beef and leg of lamb, both served pink, and a brined chicken breast, all with dripping roast potatoes, swede, roast carrots and parsnips, greens and a large Yorkshire pudding. A vegan beetroot, walnut and miso mushroom Wellington is also on the menu, along with fish and chips for anyone who doesn't want a roast.
You can book online, and when you do, the Angel asks you to pick the area of the inn you want to sit in. For larger groups, phone or email instead.
Best for: A set-price Sunday menu with starters and puddings, served until 6.30pm.
The Black Bull
The Black Bull on Middle Street is part of the Chef & Brewer group, which promotes its Sunday roasts across all of its pubs. The Black Bull's roast page lists a slow-cooked rib of beef (cooked for seven hours), a trio of roasts and a woodland mushroom bourguignon Wellington for vegetarians. Trimmings include duck fat and rosemary roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, roasted root vegetables, seasonal greens and gravy. There are children's dishes too.
Food is served until 9pm on Sundays, the latest in the village, so the Black Bull suits a late lunch or an early evening roast. Tables can be booked online through the Chef & Brewer website.
Best for: The one to choose if you want your roast after a long Sunday walk.
The Golden Lion
The Golden Lion on Hill Street, opposite the Town Hall, has a Sunday Lunch section on its food menu. It lists roast rump of beef, loin of pork, leg of lamb, chicken supreme and a sweet potato falafel roast. All the roasts come with creamed potato, smashed neeps and roasted root vegetables, so expect mash and swede here rather than the usual roast potatoes.
The pub closes at 5pm on Sundays, and CAMRA gives Sunday food times of 12pm to 4pm, so aim to eat in the early afternoon. You can book through the pub's website or on 01434 239348.
Best for: Five roasts to choose from, served with mash and neeps.
The Dyvels Inn
The Dyvels Inn on Station Road, south of the river and close to Corbridge station, serves Sunday lunch every Sunday from 12pm to 3pm. Its kitchen is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and no menu is published online, so ring to ask what's on. The pub advises booking on 0333 366 0104.
Because it's so close to the station, the Dyvels is the easiest of the five to reach by train on the Tyne Valley line.
Best for: A small country pub for a lunchtime roast, a short walk from the train.
Nearby: The Wellington, Riding Mill
A few miles east of Corbridge on the A695, The Wellington on Main Road in Riding Mill is another Chef & Brewer pub. Its Sunday menu has the same roasts as the Black Bull: slow-cooked rib of beef, a trio of roasts and the mushroom Wellington, with the same trimmings. Food is served from 11.30am to 9pm on Sundays. CAMRA says the building dates back to the 16th century, when it was known as a witches' meeting place, and the pub has a large beer garden for summer Sundays.
Book through the Chef & Brewer website or on 01434 682531. Riding Mill is the next stop east of Corbridge on the Tyne Valley line.
Best for: A roast outside the village, with a beer garden and food until 9pm.
Booking and dietary needs
- Book ahead. All five pubs take bookings. The Dyvels says booking is advisable, and the Angel says its Sunday lunches are very popular.
- Vegetarian and vegan roasts. The Angel's example menu has a vegan mushroom Wellington, both Chef & Brewer pubs have a mushroom bourguignon Wellington, and the Golden Lion has a sweet potato falafel roast. Check allergens with the pub when you book.
- Children. The Black Bull lists children's dishes alongside its roasts, and the Angel publishes a separate kids' menu. Ask the other pubs when you book.
- Late lunch. If you're eating after 4pm, the Angel (until 6.30pm), the Black Bull and the Wellington (both until 9pm) are your options.
Cooking your own roast
If you'd rather cook at home, JD Hall Family Butchers at 2 Hill Street has been trading in the village for more than a century, according to the Hexham Courant. Order your joint before the weekend.
