Hexham Abbey

Grade I listed abbey church in the centre of Hexham, founded around 674 AD, with a Saxon crypt, a visitor centre and a busy programme of concerts and seasonal events.

About Hexham Abbey

Hexham Abbey is a Grade I listed church whose origins go back to around 674 AD, when St Wilfrid founded a monastery here. Its Anglo-Saxon crypt, the only intact part of Wilfrid's church, was built partly from Roman stone taken from Corbridge, about four miles to the east.

Today the Abbey is an active parish church, open to visitors with free entry, and a visitor centre houses an exhibition, a refectory cafe and a gift shop. It hosts concerts, exhibitions and community events through the year, including the town's Christmas fair and carol services.
