Find a Tutor in Corbridge
How to find a tutor in Corbridge: academic tuition, the Kumon centre in Prudhoe, music lessons through Northumberland Music and Core Music in Hexham, swimming and tennis coaching, how the three-tier schools affect timing, and how to check a tutor's DBS.
Whether your child needs help before exams, wants to learn an instrument or is ready for proper swimming lessons, Corbridge families usually find a tutor in one of three ways: through school, through an online tutoring site, or by travelling the short distance to Hexham or Prudhoe. The village is too small for a tuition centre of its own, and we haven't found one, so this guide is honest about where the options are.
We checked every provider named here against its own website in November 2026. Prices and timetables change, so confirm the details before you book. You can also browse our Corbridge tutors page.
How Corbridge's schools shape the timing
Corbridge uses Northumberland's three-tier system, which affects when families tend to look for extra help:
- First school (ages 4 to 9). Most children start at Corbridge CofE First School on St Helen's Lane.
- Middle school (ages 9 to 13). They move on to Corbridge Middle School on Cow Lane at nine.
- High school (ages 13 to 18). At 13 most go to Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham, which has a sixth form.
That means the move to high school comes at 13, at the start of Year 9, so pupils settle into a new school only a year or two before GCSE courses begin. Some families find Year 8 or Year 9 a sensible time to arrange extra help with that transition. Our schools in Corbridge guide explains the system and admissions in more detail.
The 11-plus and independent schools. Northumberland has no state grammar schools, so there is no county 11-plus. Tutoring for entrance exams is only relevant if you are applying to an independent school. Newcastle's independent senior schools set their own entrance assessments, and their main entry points usually include age 11. In Corbridge that falls in Year 6 at middle school, not at a natural change of school. If you're considering that route, check each school's admissions page for its test dates and the subjects it assesses before you book an entrance-exam tutor.
Before you book: checking a tutor
Private tutoring in England is not regulated, so anyone can call themselves a tutor. A few checks help you choose well.
DBS checks. Since 21 January 2026, eligible self-employed tutors have been able to apply for their own enhanced DBS check, including a check of the children's barred list, through a DBS umbrella body. Parents can't apply on a tutor's behalf, and the certificate belongs to the tutor, but you can ask to see it. GOV.UK's guide for parents suggests checking:
- the original certificate, not a photo or copy
- that the name matches photo ID such as a passport or driving licence
- the issue date, because certificates have no official expiry date
- that it covers work with children
- whether the tutor subscribes to the DBS Update Service, which lets you check, with their permission, whether anything has changed since it was issued
A DBS certificate is not a pass or fail test. Weigh it alongside references, qualifications and experience.
Other questions to ask:
- Which exam boards do you know? For GCSE and A-level tuition, ask your child's school which boards it uses.
- Can we have a trial session? Many tutors offer a first session or a free consultation.
- What are your terms? Check the price, session length and cancellation policy before you commit.
- Where will lessons happen? Lessons may take place at a centre, in your home, at the tutor's home or online. For younger children, make sure a parent is nearby.
Academic tutoring
Ask the school first. Teachers can tell you exactly where your child needs help, and they may know tutors other families have used. Schools also run catch-up support and revision sessions before exams.
Kumon Prudhoe. The nearest Kumon study centre is Kumon Prudhoe, at the Spetchells Centre on Front Street in Prudhoe, about eight miles east of Corbridge. It teaches maths and English using the Kumon method: short daily worksheets at home plus sessions at the centre. When we checked, it listed classes on Wednesdays from 4pm to 6.30pm and Saturdays from 10.15am to 12.45pm, with online classes available too. Call 01661 821215.
Online tutoring sites. Websites such as Tutor Hunt, UK Tutors and Tutorful list individual tutors who say they cover Corbridge or nearby Hexham, either in person or online. You can filter by subject and level and read reviews from other parents. Each tutor sets their own price, so compare a few profiles and apply the checks above, since the sites vet tutors to different standards.
Online lessons. A good online tutor can be just as effective as an in-person one, and it widens your choice considerably in a village this size. It also avoids the drive to Hexham on dark winter evenings.
Music lessons
Northumberland Music. The county music service, run by Music Partnership North as part of Northumberland County Council, teaches instruments and singing during the school day in schools across the county. Corbridge CofE First School's website says it offers music tuition with Northumberland Music, booked and paid for through the service. From 28 April 2025 the published fees per lesson were:
| Lesson type | Fee per lesson |
|---|---|
| One-to-one, 30 minutes | £19.95 |
| One-to-one, 20 minutes | £13.86 |
| Group of two | £10.37 |
| Group of three or more | £7.13 |
Parents are invoiced each term. Pupils taking GCSE or A-level music with a Northumberland Music tutor get a 20% discount, and schools may help with costs for pupils who receive pupil premium. Register through the music tuition page on northumberland.gov.uk or email music@northumberland.gov.uk.
Core Music, Hexham. Core Music is a community music hub on Gilesgate in Hexham, about four miles from Corbridge. It offers one-to-one lessons with its tutors, group sessions and workshops, and a community recording studio, for musicians of all ages and abilities. When we checked, its vouchers priced a 30-minute one-to-one lesson at £25. It isn't currently taking phone calls, so contact it through its website or by email at info@coremusic.co.uk.
Swimming and sport
Swimming. The nearest public pool is at Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham, run by Places Leisure. It offers swimming lessons for young children and adults, plus holiday intensive courses for children. Book through Places Leisure or call 01670 620200.
Tennis. Corbridge Tennis Club at Tynedale Park offers coaching, with programmes for children from age four, young players aged 11 to 18 and adults. Its three floodlit courts mean coaching can carry on through the winter.

Best for: Popular swimming and music slots fill quickly, especially straight after school. If you need a particular day or time, contact the provider early and ask about a waiting list.
