Sport and Clubs in Corbridge
Rugby, cricket, tennis and karate in Corbridge: a guide to the village's sports clubs, their junior sections and where they play, from Tynedale Park to The Stanners.
For a village of around 3,500 people, Corbridge has a lot of organised sport. Much of it is concentrated at Tynedale Park, the rugby club's ground on Station Road, a short walk over the 1674 bridge from the village centre. Cricket is played by the river at The Stanners, and karate classes run in the Parish Hall on St Helen's Street.
This guide covers the clubs we have been able to confirm as active, with what each offers and who it suits. Session times and fees change from season to season, so check each club's own website before turning up.
Tynedale RFC
Tynedale RFC was founded in 1876 and is one of Northumberland's best-known rugby union clubs. It moved to Tynedale Park in Corbridge from Dene Park in Hexham fifty years ago, and the 2026–27 season marks its 150th anniversary. The first XV plays in National League 2 North, and home matches are played at a ground beside the Tyne.
Below the first team, the club's teams page lists the Raiders, Hadrians and Centurions, a veterans side, colts and a women's team. The junior section runs from under-12 to under-16, and the minis cover under-6 to under-11, so children can start young and stay with the club through school. There is also a girls' section, the Tynedale Panthers, with age groups from under-12 to under-18, and a ladies' touch rugby team for those who want a non-contact game.
New players and parents can sign up through the club's Pitchero page, linked from the Tynedale RFC website. Tynedale Park is also a social venue in its own right, hosting events such as the Tynedale Beer Festival in June.
Best for: Good for: families who want one club that can take a child from minis at six right through to adult rugby, plus spectators wanting National League rugby on the doorstep.
Corbridge Cricket Club
Corbridge Cricket Club was founded in 1886 and plays at The Stanners, beside the river in Corbridge. It describes itself as a welcoming club for players of all ages and backgrounds, whether they want to play, coach or volunteer.
Senior sides compete in the Northumberland and Tyneside Cricket League and the North East Midweek Cricket League, and the club also enters the Northumberland Women's Cricket League. Juniors play in the Northumberland Junior Cricket League in age-group teams.
For younger children, the club runs the national All Stars programme for five to eight-year-olds, an introduction to the game that typically starts in May. The club professional also runs coaching courses in the school holidays. Sport Tynedale lists a quoits section based at the club too, which has played in the Allen Valley Quoits League. Fixtures and contacts are on the club's Play-Cricket site.
Best for: Good for: children aged five and up trying cricket for the first time through All Stars, and adults looking for league or midweek cricket in a friendly village setting.
Corbridge Tennis Club
Corbridge Tennis Club is a younger club. It was founded in 2012 and moved into the grounds of Tynedale Park in the summer of 2013. Its three all-weather hard courts have LED floodlights, so play carries on through the winter evenings.
The club organises its programme by age: parents and young children from four, young players aged 11 to 18, adults, and seniors and veterans over 45. It offers coaching and runs members' tournaments, and it says it welcomes players of all abilities, including non-members interested in joining. In 2016 it was named Northumberland LTA Club of the Year.
Membership details and the coaching timetable are on the club's ClubSpark page.
Best for: Good for: players of any age who want floodlit courts close to home, from parents with four-year-olds to veterans looking for a regular game.
Seiken Ryu Karate
Seiken Ryu Karate is a traditional Shukokai karate association with classes across Tynedale and further afield. Its Corbridge dojo meets on Friday evenings at the Parish Hall on St Helen's Street, led by Sensei Wayne Bond.
The evening is split in two, with an earlier class for children and new starters followed by a class for adults and senior grades. Members work through a coloured-belt grading syllabus, and there are opportunities to compete. Because the association runs classes at several venues, members can also train elsewhere in the week. Current times are on the Seiken Ryu website, or you can call the association on 07912 533164.
Best for: Good for: children and adult beginners wanting a structured martial art with a clear grading path, close to the village centre.
Swimming, running and further afield
Corbridge has no swimming pool of its own. The nearest is at Wentworth Leisure Centre on Wentworth Place in Hexham, about four miles west, which is run by Places Leisure in partnership with Northumberland County Council and also has a gym, sports hall and athletics track.
There is no running club based in the village that we could find. Tynedale Harriers, based at Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham, is the nearest club and organises local races through the year. The lanes and riverside paths around Corbridge are popular with runners and cyclists, and the climb up Prospect Hill above the village is used by Newcastle cycling clubs for hill-climb time trials.
Sport Tynedale's Corbridge page also lists a Corbridge Table Tennis Club meeting at Corbridge Middle School. We could not find recent confirmation that it is still running, so check with the contact named there before going along.
