After-School Clubs in Corbridge: Wraparound Care, School Clubs and Evening Activities

A parent's guide to after-school options in Corbridge, from Corbridge Kids Club's wraparound care at the first school to middle school clubs, scouts, football, cricket, tennis, rugby and karate.

CorbridgeVillage.live·

For working parents in Corbridge, what happens between 3.15pm and teatime matters as much as the school day itself. The village is well served for its size: there is Ofsted-registered wraparound care at the first school, a long list of clubs at the middle school, and a busy evening programme of scouts and sport, much of it within walking distance. This guide sets out the options and how they fit together.

Corbridge follows the three-tier system, so children move from the first school to the middle school at nine and on to high school in Hexham at 13. The after-school picture changes at each stage, so it is worth thinking ahead.

Corbridge Kids Club: wraparound care

The main childcare option after school is Corbridge Kids Club, based at Corbridge CofE First School on St Helen's Lane. It runs a breakfast club from 7.30am to 8.45am and an after-school club from 3.15pm to 6pm, in term time only. The after-school sessions are held in a portacabin in the school car park, and activities include arts and crafts, imaginative play, construction and outdoor games.

The club is open to children from Nursery to Year 8, so it can continue to cover older siblings once they have moved up to the middle school. It has been registered with Ofsted since 2016 for childcare on non-domestic premises (reference EY538545), and the Hexham Courant has reported on the praise in its Ofsted report.

The school's website publishes current prices. From September 2025 it listed £6.50 for a short session from 3.15pm to 4pm and £13.50 for the full session to 6pm. Prices are reviewed, so check the school website or ring the school office on 01434 632534 for the latest figures and availability, as places can fill up for popular days.

Clubs at Corbridge Middle School

Corbridge Middle School on Cow Lane runs a broad programme of clubs for pupils aged nine to 13. Its website lists clubs including French, art, science, dance and computing, along with music through the choir, wind band and orchestra. Sports clubs cover netball, cricket, rugby, table tennis and girls' football. Some clubs, such as the Friendship Club and a Year 5 computer club, run at lunchtime rather than after school.

The school issues a winter timetable in September and updates it each term, so the exact line-up and days change through the year. Ask your child to bring the timetable home, or check the clubs page on the school's website. The middle school's own site does not describe a separate wraparound club, so families needing care until 6pm usually look to Corbridge Kids Club.

Scouts, Cubs and Beavers

1st Tynedale (Corbridge) Scout Group meets at the Scout HQ on St Helen's Street, close to the parish hall. In term time, Beavers (ages 6 to 8) meet on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7pm, Cubs (8 to 10 and a half) on Thursdays from 6pm to 7.30pm, and Scouts (10 and a half to 14) on Fridays from 7pm to 9pm. The group is run by volunteers, so contact it through the Hadrian Scouts website to ask about places.

Football and rugby at Tynedale Park

Tynedale Park on Station Road is the hub of junior sport in the village. Corbridge United Junior Football Club is an FA Charter Standard club with teams from Under 7s to Under 18s, coached by FA-qualified volunteers. Training days and times vary by age group, so contact the club about the right team for your child.

Tynedale RFC, founded in 1876, shares the site and has a large junior section, with boys' and girls' age-grade teams spanning ages six to 18. It also runs weekly mixed family touch rugby sessions, which can be a gentle introduction for younger children.

Cricket and tennis

Corbridge Cricket Club at The Stanners runs junior sections by age group and the national All Stars programme for five to eight-year-olds, which usually starts in May. As a summer sport, most junior cricket runs from late spring into the summer holidays.

Corbridge Tennis Club, also at Tynedale Park, has three floodlit all-weather courts and coaching for young children from age four and for players aged 11 to 18. The floodlights mean sessions can continue into the darker months.

Karate

Seiken Ryu Karate holds a children's class on Fridays at St Andrew's Parish Hall on St Helen's Street. The association teaches traditional Shukokai karate with a coloured-belt grading pathway, keeps children's groups separate from adults, and also delivers after-school clubs in the area.

Swimming and more in Hexham

For swimming lessons, gymnastics and other activities, many Corbridge families use Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham, about ten minutes' drive away. It has swimming pools, a sports hall and a programme of children's lessons, with free parking.

Planning the week

A few practical points from local parents:

  • Book wraparound early. Corbridge Kids Club has limited places, and popular days can fill up at the start of the school year.
  • Check timetables each term. School clubs change termly, and seasonal sports such as cricket only run for part of the year.
  • Mix care and clubs. Some families combine Kids Club on some days with sport or scouts on others.
  • Ask about kit and costs. Most clubs charge per term or per session and may need specific kit or a uniform.
