About Roman Vindolanda

Vindolanda is a Roman fort and civilian settlement just south of Hadrian's Wall near Bardon Mill, west of Hexham. It is run by the Vindolanda Trust, an independent charity that also operates the Roman Army Museum, and excavation on the site continues. It is best known for the Vindolanda writing tablets, wooden letters and documents that give a rare personal view of life on the frontier.

Visitors can walk the excavated remains of the fort and settlement and see finds from the site in the museum. Admission is charged, and English Heritage and National Trust membership does not apply; a saver ticket covers both Trust sites in one day. The nearest station is Bardon Mill and the Go North East 122 bus stops here. Check the website for seasonal opening, including the winter programme.
