Housesteads Roman Fort
Hilltop Roman fort on the Whin Sill, owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage, described as Britain's most complete Roman fort.
About Housesteads Roman Fort
Housesteads Roman Fort sits high on the Whin Sill escarpment in the central section of Hadrian's Wall, west of Corbridge near Haydon Bridge. English Heritage calls it Britain's most complete Roman fort, with the remains of barracks, granaries, the commanding officer's house and latrines, and some of the most dramatic stretches of Wall run along the crags either side.
The fort is owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage, so members of either organisation get in free. It is an uphill walk of about half a mile from the car park, and the visitor centre is currently closed, with toilets and refreshments in the car park and at the fort. The Go North East 122 bus from Hexham stops here.
