About Chesters Roman Fort

Chesters Roman Fort stands beside the North Tyne at Chollerford, around six miles north-west of Corbridge, and is the closest of the Hadrian's Wall forts to the village. English Heritage, which runs the site, describes it as a cavalry fort that housed around 500 cavalrymen, and its military bath house by the river is one of the best preserved in Britain. The remains of the Roman bridge abutment lie across the river, and Brunton Turret, a well-preserved Wall turret, is less than a mile away.

The Clayton Museum on site displays finds collected by John Clayton, the 19th-century antiquarian who bought up stretches of the Wall to protect them. The Go North East 122 Hadrian's Wall bus stops at the fort from Hexham, and bus passengers get a discount on admission. Opening is reduced in winter, so check English Heritage before visiting.
