About Birdoswald Roman Fort
Birdoswald Roman Fort stands on a spur above the River Irthing near Gilsland, just over the county boundary in Cumbria. English Heritage, which runs the site, says it has the longest continuous visible stretch of Hadrian's Wall, and the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail passes by.
The site has a café and is the furthest of the main Wall forts from Corbridge. Without a car it is reached by taking the Go North East 122 from Hexham to Walltown and changing to the separate HW1 service between Carlisle and Walltown; there are no through tickets. Opening is reduced in winter, so check English Heritage before travelling.
