Politics in Corbridge: Who Represents the Village and How to Contact Them

A plain guide to who represents Corbridge, from the parish council and the Corbridge county councillor to the Hexham MP and the North East Mayor, with how to get in touch and when the next elections are due.

CorbridgeVillage.live·

Corbridge has four layers of elected representation. The parish council looks after the village itself. Northumberland County Council runs the big services, and the village elects one county councillor to it. Corbridge sits in the Hexham parliamentary constituency. Since 2024 it has also been part of an elected mayor's area covering the whole North East.

This guide explains who does what, who currently holds each role, how to contact them and when you next get a vote. Knowing which tier is responsible saves a lot of time when you want something done, whether it is a pothole on Princes Street, a planning objection or a question about regional transport.

Corbridge Parish Council

The most local tier is Corbridge Parish Council. It looks after village matters such as the green spaces, benches and planters, and the Bridge End allotments, which it leases and manages. It is also a statutory consultee on planning applications, so it comments on every application in the parish before the county council decides it. It sets a precept, the small parish element of your council tax bill, and uses part of it for grants to village groups. Recent grants have gone to Corbridge in Bloom, the Corbridge Youth Initiative, the Corbridge Carpet Bowls Club and the Corbridge Chamber Music Festival.

The council meets monthly at 7pm in Room One of Corbridge Parish Hall, with no meeting in August. The remaining meetings in 2026 are on Wednesday 25 November and Wednesday 16 December. Meetings are open to the public, and there is time at the start for residents to raise questions. Agendas and minutes are published on the council's website, along with the parish magazine, Corbridge Matters.

The chair is Councillor Clouston, who was re-elected to the role in May 2026. Day-to-day business goes through the clerk, Mandy Senior, who is the best first contact for most queries.

Parish councillors also sit on village bodies such as Visit Corbridge, the Corbridge Flood Action Group, the Corbridge Village Show and Corbridge in Bloom, so the council is often a good route into those groups too.

Best for:

At the May 2025 parish election the number of candidates did not exceed the number of seats, so all seven were elected unopposed, and a later vacancy was filled by co-option in May 2026. If you are interested in serving, the clerk can tell you when there is a vacancy.

Your county councillor

Northumberland County Council provides most of the services that touch daily life: bins and recycling, roads and pavements, schools, social care, libraries such as Corbridge Library on Hill Street, and planning decisions. Our council services guide covers how each one works in the village.

Corbridge is a single-member electoral division. At the county election on 1 May 2025, the result declared by the council was:

CandidatePartyVotes
Nick OliverConservative1,070 (elected)
Roy SheehanLabour515
Kerry Ann KnightReform UK278
Rob EarnshawLiberal Democrats147

Turnout was just under 50 per cent of an electorate of about 4,000. Councillor Nick Oliver also sits on the parish council, and the parish council website gives his contact as nick.oliver@corbridge-pc.gov.uk. County councillors are a good route for issues that cross departments, or where a service request has stalled.

For routine requests, such as a missed bin or a broken streetlight, report it to the council directly first. The main switchboard is 0345 600 6400, and most services can be reported online at northumberland.gov.uk.

Your MP

Corbridge is in the Hexham constituency, which covers Hexham and much of the Tyne Valley and west Northumberland. The MP is Joe Morris (Labour), first elected on 4 July 2024. That election was a Labour gain, with a majority of 3,713.

The MP deals with matters decided by national government, such as benefits, immigration, HMRC, passports and national policy. They can also take up a case with a government department on your behalf.

MPs normally ask for your full address when you write, because they only take up casework for their own constituents.

The North East Mayor

Northumberland is one of seven councils in the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, which until May 2026 was called the North East Combined Authority. The authority covers Northumberland, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland and County Durham. It is led by an elected mayor, Kim McGuinness, who was elected in May 2024 as the first mayor of the North East.

The mayor's responsibilities are regional: transport, including the bus network and the Metro, adult skills funding, housing and regeneration investment, and economic growth. You can find out more at northeast-ca.gov.uk.

When are the next elections?

To vote you must be on the electoral register. You can register online at gov.uk/register-to-vote, which takes about five minutes, and you will need your National Insurance number. Remember to bring accepted photo ID to the polling station, or apply for a postal vote through Northumberland County Council's electoral services.

Which tier should I contact?

As a rough rule:

  • Village green spaces, allotments, local grants and planning comments: the parish council clerk.
  • Roads, bins, schools, social care, libraries and planning decisions: Northumberland County Council, then your county councillor if it stalls.
  • Buses and regional transport, skills and regional investment: the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority.
  • Benefits, tax, immigration and national policy: your MP.
