Supermarkets and Food Shops in Corbridge

Where to buy groceries in and around Corbridge: the Co-op on Hill Street, the village butcher, baker and deli, the farm shop just east of the village, and the big supermarkets in Hexham.

CorbridgeVillage.live·

Corbridge does not have a large supermarket, and most residents would say that is part of its charm. What it does have is a convenience store for everyday basics and a cluster of independent food shops within a couple of minutes' walk of the Market Place: a family butcher, a craft bakery and a well-known cheese deli. For a big weekly shop, four supermarkets sit together on the north side of Hexham, about ten minutes' drive west along the A69.

This guide covers the village shops first, then the farm shop just outside Corbridge, and finishes with the Hexham supermarkets.

Everyday groceries in the village

Co-op, Hill Street

The Co-op on Hill Street is the only supermarket in Corbridge. It is a convenience-format store, so expect a good range of everyday groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled food, an in-store bakery and household basics rather than a full weekly-shop selection. It also has PayPoint and the National Lottery, and it holds a food hygiene rating of 5.

The store opens seven days a week with long hours, which makes it the place for milk, bread and anything you have run out of. Check the Co-op store finder for current times.

The village food shops

Corbridge's independent food shops are the main reason people from across the Tyne Valley come here to shop. The butcher, the bakery and the Larder all hold the top food hygiene rating of 5.

JD Hall Family Butchers

JD Hall at 2 Hill Street is the village butcher. The Hexham Courant describes it as a business established for more than a century, and its readers named it among the best butchers in Hexham and the Tyne Valley. As with most traditional butchers, it is worth asking in the shop about ordering ahead for Christmas and other busy weekends.

Grant's Bakery

Grant's Bakery is a family-run craft bakery at 1 Market Place. It bakes bread including sourdough, savouries such as sausage rolls, cakes, pastries and patisserie, and is known locally for its Russian Cake. It was named Craft Bakery Business of the Year at the 2025 Baking Industry Awards. There is seating overlooking the square, and the bakery also sells afternoon tea boxes for collection or delivery with at least three working days' notice.

The Corbridge Larder

The Corbridge Larder at 18 Hill Street is a delicatessen that stocks more than 100 cheeses, along with bread, chutneys, cakes, chocolates, craft beer, wine and small-batch gin. It makes sandwiches, pies, quiches and antipasti to order, and puts together cheese hampers. It is open Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm, and there is a small cafe upstairs.

Il Piccolo

Il Piccolo on St Helen's Street is best known as an Italian restaurant and wine bar, but it also runs a delicatessen selling Italian goods, which makes it the village's stop for Italian ingredients.

Best for:

Between the butcher, the baker and the Larder you can put together a very good Sunday lunch or picnic without leaving Hill Street and the Market Place. All three are within a short walk of each other.

Farm shop just outside the village

Brocksbushes Farm sits off the A69 just east of Corbridge, with a postal address in Stocksfield. Its farm shop sells local produce and home baking, and there is a butchery counter with locally sourced meat. A cafe, an indoor play barn and free parking make it an easy family trip, and in summer there is pick your own fruit. The shop is open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Big supermarkets in Hexham

For a full weekly shop, most Corbridge households drive to Hexham, about four miles west. Three of the four big supermarkets are on or just off Alemouth Road, and Aldi is nearby on the Haugh Lane Industrial Estate. All have car parks.

  • Tesco Extra on Tynedale Retail Park is the largest supermarket within easy reach of Corbridge, with clothing, homeware and household goods alongside the food range.
  • Waitrose & Partners at Wentworth Park is well regarded locally for its cheese and fish counters, fresh produce and wine.
  • Aldi on the Haugh Lane Industrial Estate is one of Hexham's two discount supermarkets, with its rotating Specialbuys aisle.
  • Lidl at Hexham Gate Retail Park is the other, with an in-store bakery and the Middle of Lidl aisle.

Check each chain's store finder for current opening hours, which are shorter on Sundays. If you do not drive, Hexham is a few minutes away by train, and several bus routes run between the two; see our guide to getting around Corbridge without a car.
