Learning to Drive in Corbridge

A practical guide to learning to drive from Corbridge: applying for a provisional licence, the theory test centre in Hexham, the practical test centre on Haugh Lane and the alternatives, current DVSA fees and two driving schools that teach in the village.

CorbridgeVillage.live·

Learning to drive matters more in a village like Corbridge than it does in a city. Trains and buses will get you to Hexham and Newcastle, but jobs, sixth-form commutes and evenings out across the Tyne Valley are much easier with a licence. The good news is that both the theory and the practical test can be taken in Hexham, about four miles away, so Corbridge learners rarely have to travel far.

This guide takes you through the steps in order: provisional licence, theory test, lessons and the practical test. We checked the test centres on GOV.UK and each driving school's own website in November 2026. Fees and availability change, so confirm the details before you book.

Step 1: get your provisional licence

You need a provisional driving licence before you can book a theory test or take lessons on the road.

  • When to apply: you can apply from the age of 15 years and 9 months. Most people can start learning to drive a car at 17.
  • How to apply: apply on GOV.UK. It costs £34 online, or £43 by post using form D1.
  • What you need: you may be asked to prove your identity, usually with a passport. You must also be able to read a number plate from 20 metres.
  • How long it takes: GOV.UK says a licence applied for online should arrive within a week, unless the DVLA needs to make extra checks.

Best for: Always apply and book through GOV.UK. Unofficial websites often charge extra for doing exactly what you can do yourself on the official service.

Step 2: the theory test

The car theory test costs £23 and has two parts: multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test using video clips. You need to pass both parts at the same sitting.

According to GOV.UK's theory test centre finder, the nearest centre to Corbridge is in Hexham, at the Priory Building, Hexham Abbey, Beaumont Street, NE46 3NB. That's in the centre of Hexham, a short train or bus ride from the village. The next nearest is in Newcastle, at Tyne House on The Side, NE1 3JA.

Your theory pass certificate lasts for two years. You need to pass the practical test within that time, or you will have to take the theory test again.

Step 3: lessons with an approved instructor

Most learners use a DVSA-approved driving instructor (ADI). You can also practise with a family member or friend, as long as they are over 21, have held a full licence for the type of car for three years, and the car is insured for you. The DVSA has a "find a driving school" service on GOV.UK where you can search by postcode for approved instructors.

We found two driving schools whose own websites say they teach in Corbridge.

Emma Wilson School of Motoring. Emma Wilson School of Motoring is a Tyne Valley driving school based in Haydon Bridge. Its website says it offers manual and automatic lessons in Hexham, Haydon Bridge, Corbridge, Riding Mill, Prudhoe and the surrounding area, with a team of instructors including a dedicated automatic instructor. Call 07788 658683.

Signature School of Motoring. Signature School of Motoring is a Northumberland driving school with its head office in Ashington and an office at Tyne Green in Hexham. Its Hexham page lists Corbridge among the villages it covers and offers manual and automatic lessons. When we checked, it gave an average cost of about £37 an hour, block packages of 10, 20 or 30 hours, and a 90-minute trial lesson. Call 07398 410048.

Best for: Manual or automatic? A manual licence lets you drive both, while an automatic licence limits you to automatics. Automatic lessons can be quicker to learn in, and more cars are now automatic or electric. Choose whichever suits how you expect to drive.

Questions to ask an instructor:

  • Are you a fully qualified ADI or a trainee? Qualified instructors display a green badge on the windscreen; trainees display a pink one.
  • Will you pick me up from home in Corbridge, from school or from work?
  • What's the price per hour, and is there a discount for block bookings?
  • Do you know the Hexham test routes well?
  • What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?

Step 4: the practical test

Hexham Driving Test Centre. GOV.UK lists the nearest practical test centre to Corbridge as Hexham, at St Andrews House, Haugh Lane, Hexham, NE46 3EW. It tests cars only and is wheelchair accessible. Having a centre this close means Corbridge learners can practise on the same mix of town streets and fast rural roads they will meet on test day. DVSA figures for 2024/25 put Hexham's car pass rate at 56.7%, above the national average of around 50%.

Alternatives. If you can't get a suitable date at Hexham, GOV.UK lists these as the next nearest car test centres:

Test centreAddress
GatesheadWaterside Drive, Dunston, NE11 9HU
GosforthSandy Lane, Gosforth, Newcastle, NE3 5HB
DurhamEnna House, Whitfield Court, Meadowfield, DH7 8XL
BlythUnit 3 Sextant House, Freehold Street, NE24 3BA

If you do take the test elsewhere, it is sensible to have a few lessons around that centre first, as the roads will be unfamiliar.

Test fees. The car practical test costs £62 on weekdays and £75 in the evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays. Tests starting at 4.30pm or later count as evening tests. If you fail, you pay the full fee again to rebook.

Booking. Book through GOV.UK only. You'll need your provisional licence number and theory test pass certificate number. Your instructor can often help you choose a date that fits their diary, since you'll usually take the test in their car.

A realistic budget

The fixed costs are £34 for the provisional licence, £23 for the theory test and £62 for a weekday practical test, which comes to £119. Lessons are by far the biggest cost. At around £37 an hour, the cost adds up quickly, so it's worth practising privately between lessons if you can, and booking lessons regularly rather than leaving long gaps.

Getting to Hexham without a car

Until you pass, you'll need another way to reach the test centres. Hexham is only a few minutes away by train on the Tyne Valley line, and the Go North East 10 and 684 buses also run between Corbridge and Hexham. Our guide to getting around Corbridge without a car has the details.
