Best Hairdressers and Barbers in Corbridge

For a village of its size, Corbridge has a good choice of places to get your hair cut. This guide covers five of them: a men's barber, a freelance stylist with her own studio, and three salons, all within a few minutes' walk of the Market Place. Between them they cover skin fades and beard trims, cuts and colour, balayage, extensions, keratin blow dries and wedding hair, and two of them do nails, brows and facials too.

Most of these businesses take bookings online, but some are best reached by phone. Opening hours change, so check with the salon before you go.

Reps Studio: the village barber

Reps Studio at 24c Hill Street is Corbridge's dedicated men's barber. It is run by owner and barber stylist Alex, and its booking page sums up the focus simply: a tailored men's haircut. The menu covers skin fades, guarded haircuts, scissor trims, one-length cuts all over and beard trims, with separate options for students, children under 10 and customers over 65.

Bookings are made online through Fresha, where the shop holds a five-star average from well over a thousand ratings, with fresh reviews arriving every week or two. It opens Tuesday to Saturday, with later finishes at 7pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and shorter hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Best for: A skin fade or beard trim, booked online, with evening slots three days a week.

Jessica Gilbert Hair: a personal studio in Tinklers Yard

Jessica Gilbert Hair works from Level 2 of The Arches Building in Tinklers Yard, off Tinklers Bank. Jessica describes herself as a freelance stylist with over twenty years of experience, and her appointments are one-to-one, which suits anyone who prefers a quiet chair to a busy salon floor.

Her services include colouring, cutting and styling, hair treatments, tape hair extensions, keratin blow dries, colour packages and bridal hair. Free colour consultations and patch tests can be booked ahead of a colour appointment. Booking is online through Fresha, where she has a five-star average from several hundred ratings and a steady flow of recent reviews. She works Monday to Friday, with a late finish at 8pm on Wednesdays, and is closed at weekends.

Best for: One-to-one cuts and colour, with tape extensions and keratin blow dries on the menu.

La Suite: hair and beauty on St Helen's Street

La Suite is a hair and beauty salon at Unit 2, St Helen's Street. On the hair side it offers cuts and styling with free consultations, colour including highlights, balayage and ombre, colour correction, smoothing treatments, Olaplex treatments, men's hair and wedding hair.

The beauty menu is just as broad: nails (including gel, extensions and nail art), Dermalogica facials, massage, tanning, lashes and brows including HD Brows, and hair removal. La Suite calls itself a sustainable salon, and it has a resident dog, Rolo. You can book online through its website or by phone on 01434 239154, and gift cards are available. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, until 8pm on Thursdays.

Best for: Colour, balayage and a facial or manicure in the same visit.

The Independent Salon: Hill Street

The Independent Salon occupies 19 Hill Street, in the premises previously known as Reflections. It is a hair and beauty salon, and alongside hairdressing it offers gel nails, pedicures, eyebrow shaping and tinting, eyelash tinting and face waxing. Beauty appointments can be booked online. Capelli Hair Design: Watling Street

Capelli Hair Design is an independent salon at 16 Watling Street. Its website describes "innovative and contemporary cutting and colouring skills", with each service tailored to the client. There is no online booking, so phone the salon on 01434 633700. Its published hours run from Tuesday to Saturday, with a later finish on Thursdays.

Best for: Cutting and colouring in a small independent salon, booked by phone.

Men's cuts

Reps Studio is the only dedicated barber in the village, and its menu is entirely men's and boys' cuts and beard work. Of the salons, La Suite lists men's hair among its services. If you would rather go to a traditional walk-in barber, or need a shave, the wider choice is in Hexham, a short bus or train ride west.

Wedding and event hair

Two of these businesses list wedding hair. Jessica Gilbert offers bridal hair, and La Suite offers wedding hair alongside nails, lashes and tanning, so a bridal party can be looked after in one place. Get in touch well ahead of the date and ask whether a trial is available.

Late appointments

If you work during the day, several of these places stay open into the evening one day a week. Jessica Gilbert works until 8pm on Wednesdays, La Suite is open until 8pm on Thursdays, and Capelli lists a 7pm finish on Thursdays. Reps Studio is open until 7pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Sundays are quiet: none of the five lists Sunday opening, and most are also closed on Mondays.

Getting there

All five are a short walk from the Market Place. Reps Studio and The Independent Salon are on Hill Street, which leads off the Market Place past the Town Hall. Capelli is on Watling Street, La Suite is on St Helen's Street at the top of Watling Street, and Jessica Gilbert's studio is in Tinklers Yard, off Tinklers Bank.
